Summary
Responsible parenthood means having and raising children deliberately, with the capacity and commitment to provide for their physical, emotional, educational and spiritual needs. Christian teaching treats children as a gift and treats parenthood as a trust rather than a possession. The duties run in both directions: parents are to provide, protect, instruct and correct fairly, while children are to honour and obey their parents. Both sets of duties appear together in the New Testament, which is significant, because each is limited by the other.
