The 2026 dates

KNEC has confirmed that the 2026 theory papers run from Monday 26 October to Friday 30 October, with a rehearsal day on Friday 23 October. Morning papers begin at 8.30am.

Project components run earlier in the year, with schools uploading marks against fixed milestone deadlines. The Creative Arts and Sports project window ran from May to July.

Reporting in the sources varies slightly on the closing date for the full assessment period, so confirm the paper-by-paper schedule with your child's school — KNEC issues the detailed timetable to centres rather than to families.

How the placement score is built

Two components make up the score. School-Based Assessment from junior school contributes 40 per cent, and KJSEA contributes 60 per cent.

That split matters for how you plan. Because 40 per cent is already banked by the time Term 3 starts, KJSEA is decisive but not the whole picture — and equally, a strong SBA record cannot carry a poor KJSEA on its own.

Preparing without cramming

The assessment tests competencies rather than recall, so working through past-style papers under time pressure tends to reveal more than rereading notes does.

A practical pattern that works: identify the weakest strands first using short topic quizzes, spend the bulk of revision there, and use full timed papers to build stamina closer to the date.

Reading time is included in the total on most papers, and no extra time is given, so practising to the clock matters as much as knowing the content.

On the day

Candidates who arrive late must give the supervisor a satisfactory reason, and a paper may only be given to a candidate more than half an hour late in exceptional circumstances.

KNEC rules on irregularities are strict: results for an affected subject are cancelled, and where irregularities are widespread at a centre, results for the whole centre may be cancelled.
