• Outline different ways of spending leisure time.
• Distinguish between active and passive forms of leisure.
• Explain why young people sometimes misuse leisure and what the consequences are.
• Appreciate the Christian understanding of rest and the wise use of free time.

Summary

Leisure is time not taken up by work, study or duty, which a person is free to use as they choose. Christian teaching treats leisure positively, since the creation account includes rest and Jesus withdrew regularly to rest and pray. The question the syllabus raises is not whether to have leisure but how it is used, because the same free time can build a person up or damage them. Leisure divides usefully into active forms, in which a person participates, and passive forms, in which they mainly receive.
