By the end of this sub-strand, you should be able to:

  • Explain the relationship between an atom, an element, a molecule, and a compound
  • Assign symbols to selected elements
  • Write word equations to represent reactions of elements forming compounds
  • Outline the applications of common elements in society

Summary

An atom is the smallest particle of matter. Atoms of the same kind make up an element. When atoms bond together, they form a molecule — and if the bonded atoms are of different elements, that molecule is a compound. This chain, from atom to compound, is the foundation of chemistry.
