4.0 Production Techniques · 4.1 Sewing Skills: Constructing Household Items

Syllabus tag: Kenya CBC | Grade 8 Agriculture and Nutrition | Strand 4.0 Production Techniques | Sub-Strand 4.1 Sewing Skills: Constructing Household Items (14 lessons)

Lesson objectives

By the end of this sub-strand, you should be able to:

  • Identify types of seams used in making household items
  • Make samples of seams on a piece of cloth
  • Construct a household item using seams
  • Appreciate the use of seams in making household items

Summary

A seam is the line where two pieces of fabric are joined by stitching. Open seams and plain seams are two basic types used in making household items — and practising them on sample fabric first builds the confidence and skill needed to construct a finished item like a bag, pillow case, or cushion cover.
