Summary

This topic transfers the main-idea-versus-detail distinction from listening (Theme 3.1) into reading. Two named strategies do the work: reading for main ideas and reading for details. They ask different questions of a text and use the text differently, and applying the right one to the right question is what makes reading efficient rather than a slow word-by-word slog.
