Nature, Purpose and Classification of Law
1. Meaning and nature of law
Law is a system of binding rules, created and enforced by recognised authority, that governs conduct within a society. A legal rule carries state-backed sanction for breach - a fine, imprisonment, a court order - unlike a purely moral rule, which carries only social disapproval.
2. Purpose of law
Maintaining order and predictability. Resolving disputes through a recognised process rather than force. Protecting rights and property. Facilitating social and economic activity - contracts, trade, and organisations all depend on a predictable legal framework.
