Summary
Jomo Kenyatta led Kenya to independence in 1963 and was its first Prime Minister and President, pursuing reconciliation, education and economic growth while leaving land and inequality unresolved. Wangari Maathai founded the Green Belt Movement, linked environment to democracy, and became the first African woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize in 2004.
