Summary
Trade is the exchange of goods and services. It began as barter, whose difficulties led to currency. Trade is local, regional or international. The Trans-Saharan trade carried gold, slaves and ivory north across the Sahara and salt, cloth, horses and beads south, and it spread Islam, Arabic and urban growth in West Africa.
