Lesson objectives
By the end of this sub-strand, you should be able to:
- Explain the meaning of pre-career support systems.
- Identify psychosocial, social and other support systems available to learners.
- Explore and use support systems in making career decisions.
- Appreciate the value of seeking support rather than deciding alone.
Summary
A pre-career support system is any person, group, service or resource that helps a learner prepare for and decide about their working life. Support comes in several forms: psychosocial support for confidence and emotional wellbeing, social support from family, peers and community, informational support such as career materials and guidance services, and practical support including finance and mentorship. The sub-strand exists because career decisions made in isolation are usually made on poor information, and because many learners do not know what help is available to them.
