By the end of this sub-strand, you should be able to:

• Identify a problem, gap or opportunity in the community.
• Plan a community service-learning project addressing that problem.
• Implement the project and work effectively with others.
• Reflect on the project and report what was learned.

Summary

Community service-learning combines doing something useful for the community with learning from doing it. It differs from ordinary volunteering because reflection is built in: the learner is expected to understand the problem, plan a response, carry it out and then examine what worked and what did not. The project runs through a cycle of identification, planning, implementation, reflection and reporting. Community Service Learning is also a core subject at Senior School, so this sub-strand prepares directly for Grade 10.
