Summary

The perfect aspect links one time to another. The present perfect, formed with has or have plus the past participle, connects a past action to the present moment. The past perfect, formed with had plus the past participle, connects one past action to a later past one, marking which happened first. The commonest Kenyan learner error is using the present perfect where the simple past is required, and the rule that settles it is straightforward: a finished time expression demands the simple past.
