Summary
Long before modern nations existed, visitors from Asia and Europe reached the East African coast, and interaction with local communities helped shape Swahili civilisation — a distinctive culture of trading city-states. Studying how early visitors and local communities interacted shows how many of the practices we take for granted today have roots stretching back centuries.
