Summary

Cells constantly exchange materials with their surroundings. Diffusion moves particles like gases and dissolved substances from an area of high concentration to low concentration. Osmosis is a special case — the movement of water across a membrane, from a dilute solution to a more concentrated one. Both processes happen without the cell using extra energy.
