Summary

A trickster narrative is an oral story in which a clever character outwits a stronger or more powerful one. Kenyan and wider African oral literature is rich in them -- Hare, Tortoise and Spider are the usual tricksters. The stories entertain, but they also carry moral lessons, and the trickster is not always the one we are meant to admire.
