Syllabus tag: KCSE | Physics | Form 4 | Topic 40 Electronics
Lesson objectives
By the end of this topic, you should be able to:
- Distinguish conductors, insulators and semiconductors.
- Explain intrinsic and extrinsic semiconductors and doping.
- Describe the p-n junction diode and its use in rectification.
- Describe the transistor and its use in switching and amplification.
Summary
Semiconductors have conductivity between that of conductors and insulators, and it increases with temperature. Doping produces n-type (extra electrons) and p-type (holes) material. A p-n junction diode conducts in one direction only, which allows rectification. A transistor switches and amplifies.
