Summary
World War I (1914–18) arose from alliances, militarism, nationalism and imperial rivalry, and was triggered by the assassination at Sarajevo. It ended in the Treaty of Versailles and produced the League of Nations, which failed to prevent World War II (1939–45). That war produced the United Nations and accelerated African independence.
