Summary
Missionary education was introduced to spread Christianity and produce clerks and artisans, not professionals. Its limitations and the 1929 conflict over female circumcision produced independent churches and schools. The mission-educated then formed the early political organisations from 1921, which were ethnically based, led by young educated men, and non-militant.
