Syllabus tag: KCSE | Chemistry | Form 3 | Topic 16 Sulphur and its Compounds
Lesson objectives
By the end of this topic, you should be able to:
- Describe the extraction, allotropes and properties of sulphur.
- Describe the preparation, properties and test for sulphur(IV) oxide.
- Describe the Contact process for manufacturing sulphuric acid.
- Describe the properties and uses of sulphuric acid and of sulphates.
Summary
Sulphur is a yellow non-metal with two crystalline allotropes, rhombic and monoclinic, whose transition temperature is 96 °C. Sulphur(IV) oxide is an acidic, poisonous gas that bleaches by reduction and turns acidified potassium dichromate(VI) from orange to green. The Contact process manufactures sulphuric acid.
