Summary

Democracy is government by the people, either directly or through elected representatives. Representative democracy is presidential or parliamentary. Its principles include free elections, rule of law, separation of powers and respect for rights. Human rights are universal, inalienable and indivisible, and are set out internationally in the International Bill of Rights.
