Lesson objectives

By the end of this topic, you should be able to:

  • Determine direction, compass points and the three types of bearing.
  • Locate places by grid reference and describe how relief is represented.

Summary

A map is a representation of the earth's surface, or part of it, drawn to scale on a flat surface. Scale may be given as a statement, a representative fraction (RF) or a linear scale, and converting between them is a standard skill. Bearings are measured clockwise from north in three figures. Grid references give eastings before northings.
