Summary
Energy from respiration is not used directly. It is first transferred to ATP, the cell's immediate energy currency, which releases it in small usable amounts wherever needed. Different foods yield different amounts of energy, fats about twice as much per gram as carbohydrates or proteins. Respiration rate is affected by temperature, oxygen, substrate and the activity of the organism.
