Lesson objectives
By the end of this topic, you should be able to:
- Define weather and state its elements.
- Describe a weather station and the siting of the Stevenson screen.
- Describe the instruments used to measure each element of weather.
- Calculate temperature, rainfall and humidity values and interpret them.
Summary
Weather is the condition of the atmosphere of a place at a particular time. Its elements are temperature, rainfall, humidity, wind, pressure, sunshine, cloud cover and evaporation. A weather station houses the instruments, with thermometers kept in a Stevenson screen so they record air temperature in the shade, not the sun's heat directly.
