Water and Hydrogen

Water · Water and Hydrogen

Syllabus tag: KCSE | Chemistry | Form 1 | Topic 5 Water and Hydrogen

Lesson objectives

By the end of this topic, you should be able to:

  • State the properties and uses of water and explain hardness of water.
  • Describe the reactions of metals with water and steam.
  • Prepare hydrogen and state its properties, tests and uses.
  • Describe the reduction of metal oxides by hydrogen.

Summary

Water is a compound of hydrogen and oxygen, formula H₂O. Metals react with water or steam with decreasing vigour down the reactivity series, giving hydrogen. Hydrogen is prepared from a metal and a dilute acid, pops with a lighted splint, and reduces the oxides of less reactive metals.
